SEO Basics for your Website: Part One

By Karina Tama

SEO Basics are crucial for your website. Many people don’t give importance to this step when building a website. However, you have to start with SEO Basics to help position your website properly to get higher ranking in the search engines, thus making it possible for more people to find your site.

We will go over the following in this chapter: Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, and Heading Tags.
  1. Title Tags are really important to use. You have to use a main keyword and variations in each page. The main keyword and set of variations need to be different per page. You should not pretend to trick the search engines by using the same main keyword in several pages. The written content of your website has to flow naturally and be clear. You first write for the audience than for the search engine. You need to avoid stuffing your title tags with a bunch of keywords. It’s really bad to have your titles spammed. On the other hand, Google used to display 70 characters of a title. Lately that has changed, and now it is measured by pixels width. It has been made more complicated to understand, but Moz has a tool that helps you with that.

  2. Meta Descriptions don’t help with the ranking anymore. It’s still part of the SEO basics. TheMeta Descriptions are intended to be a brief and concise summary of your page's content to introduce your business, brand, product or services to your potential customers. Therefore, take advantage of it and write something that engages the prospects. Google shows 156 Characters (Including Spaces) for Meta Description. You have more room to explain a little bit more about your business. Get it right from the start, and it will pay off.

  3. Heading Tags need to be used in a strategic way for your SEO basic. You start the H1 pages without over optimizing them. Plus, you can embed your main keywords in the H1 tag. Then use H2 and H3 for the rest of your content. Only use H1 once. I hope you got the idea. Don’t overlap the main keyword! Instead, you can use variations. For this, you can use the Google keyword Planner to get ideas and variations of your main keyword. If you do that, you will have more chances of getting ranked. These good SEO basics practices will also enhance your content and make it easy for your audience to understand.
The information mentioned above is very helpful if you understand and use it for your website. It can be a little time consuming, but it will really help you to build your website in the right way. SEO basic is a must if you want to be indexed by the Search Engines.
